Should Cats or Dogs Start a CBD Regimen?

More of our furry friends around the world are taking daily doses of cannabidiol (CBD) just like their owners and finding great success.  Not to mention, there is a booming CBD pet market waiting to provide your dog or cat with the cannabidiol that they deserve.

CBD products are being made just for pets, with their unique needs in mind, in order to address all kinds of issues that commonly affect them.  Still, any pet owner would certainly question whether or not it’s actually advisable to put a pet on a cannabidiol routine.

Is CBD Toxic to Pets?

As it turns out, the hemp plant is as nontoxic to pets as it is to humans because all mammals have an endocannabinoid system.  This is the system that cannabinoids like CBD work with directly to balance the body in order to achieve homeostasis.  Pets, having an endocannabinoid system, have the ability to store cannabinoids in their bodies as needed without them accumulating in toxic levels.  Giving them cannabinoids allows a chemical reaction to take place that forces these regulatory effects to take place, thus creating a sense of balance between the body and mind.

That being said, it is important to note that you should never give your pet any form of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), as intoxicating cannabinoids are not safe for their nervous systems.  Never give your pet delta 8 THC, delta 10 THC, or marijuana, as this can be very harmful to their health, and can lead to dangerous changes in their behavior.

What Makes CBD Useful to Our Furry Friends?

Research has shown that cannabidiol can offer unique anti-inflammatory properties to all mammals, as researchers discovered that hemp was helpful to canines with osteoarthritis.  More studies are underway to demonstrate the usefulness of hemp in veterinary applications, but so far, we have yet to hear of any major negative consequences associated with giving a cat or dog a daily dose of CBD, as long as it’s administered properly and given in the form of a pet-friendly formula.

What You Should Know Before Giving Your Pet CBD, and Then During Their Sessions?

Although CBD has its benefits in a gentle and holistic way, there are some key things you need to know and do in order for your pet to get the most out of their CBD routine.

#1: Talking to Your Veterinarian First

While CBD is generally okay for pets to take, some pets may be on medications that could interact with hemp compounds.  Not only that, but a veterinarian needs to be the one who offers a clear list of guidelines pertaining to getting your pet started.  Plus, have a routine that is the most likely to give your precious companion natural, holistic relief.

So, ask your vet noticeably clear questions, such as how much they should take, whether or not they should take CBD daily, and which delivery method is right for them.  The more questions you ask, the closer you’ll be to getting your beloved animal started on a routine that can truly help them.

#2: Finding the Right Formula

First and foremost, you must only give your pet a CBD product designed specially for pets because of two reasons:

  • Some CBD products for humans contain ingredients that are harmful to pets, such as peppermint extracts and other essential oils.
  • Pets have smaller bodies; hence, they have fewer cannabinoid receptors in their systems.  This means that giving them a human-strength concentration can lead to cannabinoid overload, resulting in sleepiness or other unwanted reactions.  CBD products made for pets come in milligram strength ranges according to body weight, so that they get just enough cannabidiol to satisfy their needs.

Also, you will need to consider the delivery method that’s appropriate for them according to their preferences and specific needs.

  • Topicals: Made for pets that are intended to be used for localized pain.  These formulas do not offer internal effects as topical solutions target the problem area without spreading throughout the body.  They are formulated taking into account the fact that many pets try to lick these formulas off of their skin and fur.
  • Oils: Highly versatile products that can be administered below the tongue, applied topically, or added to their food.  They offer widespread properties throughout the body and come in different milligram strengths.
  • Treats: For finicky pets who can benefit from an internal method but won’t take a CBD oil.  CBD dog and cat treats come in flavors your pet will love and contain the same number of milligrams in each piece for easy daily dosing.

#3: Dosing Properly

Yes, there are a couple of key matters of dosing that must be carefully considered:

  • Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to choose the right dose or milligram strength based on their body weight.
  • Consult with your veterinarian on how often you should give your pet a dose of cannabidiol.  Most vets will recommend daily administration so that their bodies can build up enough cannabinoids for the hemp to work as effectively as possible.

#4: Monitoring Your Pet

When your pet is first getting used to their new CBD routine, monitor them carefully to make sure there are no unwanted changes in their behavior or health.  If any side-effects seem to occur, seek medical attention as soon as possible.
